Deveaux Suspended 3 Games For Elbow

Andre Deveaux will be suspended for 3 NHL games for his elbow on Wednesday night to the head of Thomas Flesichmann during the Ranger loss to the Panthers. I'm not surprised in the least by the suspension, I had predicted 3 games yesterday. The suspension will cost Deveaux approximately $8,500 bucks and may result in a demotion to the AHL, although not directly because of the elbow itself.

Listen to Brendan Shanahan explain the suspension here:

My initial reaction was that although the elbow looked nasty and was definitely suspension worthy that Deveaux just happened to react to a move by Flesichmann to avoid Deveaux. I didn't think that the hit was intent to injure and I'm glad that the NHL agreed.

2011 Stanley Cup Finals Preview

The 2011 Stanley Cup Final is a little different than most because it features a chance for a Canadian NHL team to win the Stanley Cup. Tony Plush and/or Nyjer Morgan will skate with San Jose Sharks this week

Most people know Nyjer Morgan as the outfielder who won the 2011 NLDS for the Milwaukee Brewers in extra innings, or as the certified goofball who has a collection of alter egos ranging from the entertaining Tony Plush to the "city slicker" Tony Tombstone.

But before all of that, he was Flash Morgan for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League.

Inspired to play after the 1988 Winter Olympics, the San Francisco native embarked on a short-lived but memorable junior hockey career, telling NHL.com that he was "just like that little pest on the ice, going around and giving people the business, like Sean Avery."

Last summer, Morgan appeared on Jim Rome's ESPN show while rocking a "No. 2 Plush" San Jose Sharks jersey. (Foul? Depends on if the team gave it to him or not.)

"We knew he had a hockey background and when we saw him on Jim Rome wearing our sweater," Sharks captain Joe Thornton said Monday in a press release, "[so] we wanted to invite him to get on the ice with us."

Yep: Nyjer Morgan/T. Plush/Flash Morgan will skate with the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday during their morning practice. Via the Sharks:

"I'm really excited to get on the ice with the team," said Morgan.

"I've been a diehard fan since the team came to San Jose in 1991. I will never forget the George Kingston and Patty Falloon days. I'm not sure the guys are ready for me!"

What, no love for Kelly Kisio or Jeff Odgers?

Pretty sure the NHL knows what it needs to do here: Add the cross-sport shootout to the next All-Star Skills Competition. Nyjer Morgan for the Sharks, Jonas Jerebko for the Red Wings ? who else?

Alexander Ovechkin vs. Sidney Crosby: An in-depth comparison

The NHL's two most marketable stars are back in the news this week. But while Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin are both making headlines again, it's for very different reasons.

In Crosby's case, the news is good. He's finally returned after missing almost 11 months with a concussion, and his four-point performance in his first game back already has fans wondering if he can win the scoring title despite missing a quarter of the season.

Ovechkin is at the other end of the spectrum. With his numbers declining and rumours of tension in the dressing room of the suddenly mediocre Capitals, some are starting to wonder if the 26-year-old has already peaked as an elite NHL talent.

Crosby and Ovechkin have been linked ever since they both made their debuts during the 2005-06 season, and it appears they will be for years to come. Here's a comparison of two of the league's most talented and popular young players.

Alexander Ovechkin: Has been known to get angry with his coach while on the bench and shout obscenities.
Sidney Crosby: Has been known to get angry with his coach while on the bench and shout "I'm just going to go out there and give 110%", since that's all he's programmed to ever say.

Sidney Crosby: Wears jersey number 87, signifying his year of birth.
Alexander Ovechkin: Wears jersey number 8, signifying the number of goals he needs to score in any given game before he won't automatically be blamed if the Capitals lose.

Alexander Ovechkin: Has been invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at games for the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles.
Sidney Crosby: Would probably be thrilled to do the same if Pittsburgh ever managed to get a professional baseball team.

Sidney Crosby: Has had the opportunity to hone his acting ability in commercials for brands like Reebok and Tim Hortons.
Alexander Ovechkin: Has had the opportunity to hone his acting ability every time Bruce Boudreau starts yelling about maybe backchecking once in a while and he has to pretend that he's listening.

Alexander Ovechkin: Has occasionally found himself in trouble with the league due to questionable hits against defenceless opponents.
Sidney Crosby: Would never check a defenceless opponent in a dangerous manner because he is classy and respects the game and Matt Cooke usually gets there first.

Sidney Crosby: May one day come to be viewed as a cautionary example who taught a generation of fans a valuable lesson about the dangers of head injuries.
Alexander Ovechkin: May one day come to be viewed as a cautionary example who taught a generation of fans a valuable lesson about the dangers of thinking it's a good idea for guys to get lower back tattoos.

Alexander Ovechkin: Is so good at anticipating the flow of the game that he can often react to an incoming pass attempt before the puck has even left his teammate's stick.
Sidney Crosby: Is so good at anticipating the flow of the game that he can often react to an opposing player's attempted body check by falling down before he's even touched.

Sidney Crosby: Has had one 50-goal season so far, and given his injury concerns experts admit they have no idea how many more he may have over the course of his career.
Alexander Ovechkin: Rather than cause all sorts of confusion, was apparently considerate enough to get all of his 50-goal seasons out the way early.

Alexander Ovechkin: Owns the hockey world's record for the most Twitter followers, with 250,000.
Sidney Crosby: Owns the hockey world's record for the most MySpace friends, with nine.

Sidney Crosby: Diehard Pittsburgh fans will eagerly tell you that he's following in the footsteps of legendary Penguins from past generations, like Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis and Paul Coffey.
Alexander Ovechkin: Diehard Washington fans will eagerly tell you that he's following in the footsteps of legendary Capitals from past generations, before trailing off, furrowing their brow, and eventually changing the subject.

Alexander Ovechkin: Despite his flashy on-ice personality, is known to dress casually off the ice and rarely calls attention to himself with gaudy accessories.
Sidney Crosby: In contrast to the classy Ovechkin, has been known to walk out of the arena wearing a giant diamond-studded ring or a gold medallion around his neck.

Mississippi RiverKings bring back wild turkey jerseys featuring turtle sniper

If we were to give an award to the minor league hockey team that designs a promotional jersey right down to the very last detail, the SPHL's Mississippi RiverKings would likely be near to the top of the frontrunners.

Please recall last January when the RiverKings teamed up with the National Wild Turkey Federation, a national nonprofit conservation and hunting organization, and created one of the more unique jerseys we've ever seen, featuring a giant turkey, its backside and a modified logo featuring a turtle carrying a hunting rifle.

On Saturday night, the RiverKings will once again wear a hunting-themed jersey for their game against the Fayetteville FireAntz.

We're all for the changing of logos to make gentle creatures like the turtle much more terrifying. The addition of the hunting rifle will help that.

After the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit the NWTF, as they're the RiverKings M.V.P. Nonprofit Organization of the night.

Potential issues in the next NHL CBA

After several awkward minutes, Fehr realized that
"high five me if you love escrow" was a bad idea.
So it turns out that the NBA won't be challenging the NHL's status as the only league to lose a full season to work stoppage after all. Despite dire predictions that the year would be lost, the NBA and its players managed to reach an agreement that will save most of the season.

That comes on the heels of recent agreements that saw both the NFL and MLB sign new deals without missing any games. So with three of North America's big four sports leagues having found labour peace, all eyes now shift back to the NHL. With the league's current collective bargaining agreement set to expire before next season, hockey fans are hoping that negotiations go more smoothly than they did the last time around.

So what will be the major issues in the next NHL CBA? That depends on who you talk to. As it turns out, everyone seems to have a different opinion on which issues should be top priorities. Here's a look at what various stakeholders around the NHL say they'd like to see changed in the league's next CBA:

Brendan Shanahan - Would like to increase the maximum player fine from the current $2,500; failing that, would at least like the players to stop paying it by grabbing a fistful of spare change, throwing it at me from their car window, then laughing and speeding off.

Alexander Ovechkin - I've repeatedly argued that the NHL give Russian players the chance to compete in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, although to be honest you should probably also check with some of the guys who will make the team.

Kyle Turris - Pass a rule banning pointless holdouts where the player misses two months and doesn't get anything he was asking for, or at least have someone tell my agent that you did.

Scott Gomez - Realize that buyouts of guaranteed contracts will be up for discussion in the next CBA, but would still prefer if Jacques Martin and Pierre Gauthier didn't dramatically pack a suitcase for me during every intermission "just in case".

ESPN - Wait, did you say the 2004-2005 lockout ended? I guess we probably should have been showing some highlights or something over the last seven years.

Pittsburgh Penguins - Losing another season would be an absolute last resort, but if it comes to that let's make just sure that our old pal Gary gets to run the draft lottery again, wink wink. Wait, don't write that last part down.

Cory Schneider - So a work stoppage is when you just sit around every night and don't ever get to play any actual hockey? Hmm, I guess I should go ask Roberto what that's like.

Donald Fehr - Nothing helps set the stage for a long day of negotiating like an extra-large coffee first thing in the morning, but it's still kind of awkward to pull up to that drive-through window on days that Paul Kelly is working.

Phoenix Coyotes - Don't really care what's in next season's CBA, but are going to need to make sure it's translated into French. Uh, no reason.

Buffalo Sabres - Since we're renegotiating things, any chance we could update "the code" so that your goalie getting run over doesn't somehow make you obligated to let all the Boston Bruins punch you in the face repeatedly the next time you play?

Jay Feaster - We definitely need some sort of new rule where you're allowed to trade old, overpaid players for younger, cheaper ones. Wait, what? Oh man, since when?

Gary Bettman - Already know that Donald Fehr has a history of tough negotiating on behalf of his players without much regard for the impact on the league and its teams, so there's really no need for him to rub it in by wearing a Montreal Expos cap to every bargaining session.

Wednesday?s Three Stars: Neuvirth blanks Habs; Mueller leads Avs

No. 1 Star: Michal Neuvirth, Washington Capitals

Making his first start in 11 games, Neuvirth recorded his second shutout of the season and sixth of his career with a 31-save night in a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Holding the lead and shutout in place, Neuvirth made 17 of his 31 saves in the third period. The Capitals got goals from Mathieu Perreault, Marcus Johansson and Alex Ovechkin for their 10th win in their last 14 games in Montreal.

No. 2 Star: Peter Mueller, Colorado Avalanche

After missing all of last season with a concussion and playing just three games in October before once again being out of the lineup, Mueller returned to the Avs last week and in his fourth game back scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Colorado edged the Florida Panthers 4-3 in overtime. Ryan O'Reilly was the hero netting his 13th of the season in the extra frame:

No. 3 Star: Francois Beauchemin, Anaheim Ducks

Beauchemin recorded his first 3-point game since Oct. 6, 2007 and first 2-goal (regular season) game since Mar. 14, 2007 during a 6-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. Jason Blake scored a goal and added an assist to give him six points in his last three games. Jonas Hiller stopped 25 saves for his fifth win in six starts.

Honorable Mention: Dave Bolland, Jimmy Hayes and Andrew Shaw each scored a goal and added an assist, while captain Jonathan Toews chipped in a pair as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 to improve to 4-0-1 i their last five. Toews now has goals in three straight games along with a five-game point streak. Rookie Shaw scored for the fourth straight game and has started his NHL career with five tallies in his first eight games ... Thanks to Luca Sbisa, the Coyotes were denied a great scoring opportunity against the Ducks:

Stephen Weiss scored a goal in the loss for the Panthers in his 600th NHL game ... It didn't take long for Rene Bourque to have to answer for his elbow earlier this month on Nicklas Backstrom:

Did you know? In Mueller's last six games that he's been on the scoresheet, dating back to the 2009-10 season, he's done so with multiple points.

Dishonorable Mention: Jhonas Enroth was in net for all six Chicago goals and dropped his seventh straight start ... Buffalo has now lost 12 of their last 15 and 10 straight games on the road ... As a team, the Sabres won just 19 of 50 faceoffs ... Montreal dropped to 4-10-1 in their last 15 games ... Florida has now lost seven in a row away from BankAtlantic Center.

Do NHL players, alumni deserve larger slice of the Winter Classic revenue pie?

Like the All-Star skills competition, the NHL Winter Classic Alumni Game is starting to create more buzz and memories than the main event. In 2010, Mario Lemieux's return to the ice basically created the alumni game in Pittsburgh. This season, the Eric Lindros and Bernie Parent Show packed 45,000 fans into Citizens Bank Park.

Which is to say that the event is a success, both in popularity and financially. Hence, the men that make the event possible, the NHL alumni, are wondering if they actually get enough of a benefit out of this.

Dave Feschuk and Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star have a story on Thursday that, frankly, makes one reconsider the alumni game experience. Because players ain't getting' paid, yo:

Multiple alumni sources said they weren't paid for their services. Another source with knowledge of alumni affairs said he'd heard they were paid a nominal fee of $200. Perhaps there is more to the story.

While airfare and accommodations were also covered, some players actually spent money to play in the alumni game. Airline baggage fees meant lugging hockey equipment to Philadelphia cost about $50 to $100. Those who didn't want to travel with hockey sticks could purchase one in the dressing room for $50.

This all speaks to a question that'll no doubt come up in the next CBA war this fall: The revenue generated by the Winter Classic, and the players' share of it.

In terms of the alumni game, NHL COO John Collins inferred to the Star that this is a new event with some growing pains, saying that it's the home team ? the Philadelphia Flyers ? that organizes the alumni game.

Steve Larmer, the former New York Rangers forward and a longtime NHLPA heavy, wants to see some sort of fund for struggling ex-players created or fueled by Winter Classic alumni game revenue: "I think everyone involved would love to know that they are doing something that doesn't just help the NHL team owner, but also does some good."

What does the financial pie look like for the Winter Classic? From Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press, writing about the 2013 game:

Even though this would be a Wings home game on the schedule, it really is a league event. The league essentially buys a home game from the host team. The NHL writes a check for the revenue from one home game (and rounds up, of course), then controls the event.

As far as revenue generated, The Atlantic reported that it can be upwards of $36 million to the host city:

That's how much Boston reaped in 2010, when 38,112 people braved the elements to watch the Bruins beat the Flyers in overtime at Fenway Park.

Last year's game, held at Heinz Park in Pittsburgh, wasn't quite that lucrative. Revenues there were about $22 million, even 68,111 fans attended, says Craig Davis, vice president of sales and marketing for Visit Pittsburgh, the city's tourism agency.

The lower tally was due to the fact that about half the spectators were from the Pittsburgh area and spent only $34 a day on game-related expenses, or about $6.1 million.

Again, that's for the host city; which means above and beyond tickets and merchandise. So we're just talking a massive amount of coin generated by the event.

Next year, the Winter Classic is going to shatter records. The alumni game between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs will be an essential part of that celebration. Based on the Star story, it's a fairly easy fix for the NHL: Take ownership of the alumni event, seeing how dramatically its grown, and ensure that either the players themselves are better compensated or that the money goes into a fund to help ex-players.

But what about the current players in the Winter Classic?

The Winter Classic revenue is shared between the players and the NHL through their collectively bargained percentages. The bigger the Classic, the more the rest of the NHL's players benefit.

But again: What about the current players in the Winter Classic?

Their participation in unpredictable, uncontrollable elements is the reason we have a game. They hype it. They market it. They appear on candid reality shows on pay cable for it. Yes, the NHLPA as a whole benefits; but should the players who compete in the game directly benefit in a greater way, considering how much revenue is being generated off their efforts to sell and compete in an special attraction?

We're not sure what the answer is. But it wouldn't surprise us at all to hear Donald Fehr ask the question this year.

Penguins GM on temporary captain with Sidney Crosby out: ?I?m saying that would never happen?

Mark Madden's fun. The Pittsburgh WXDX radio personality/hockey columnist interviewed Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero on Monday and gleaned some interesting information: Like the fact that Shero expects injured defenseman Kris Letang to return to full practice on Tuesday.

But the juiciest stuff was, naturally, the Sidney Crosby stuff. Shero said Crosby is visiting Ted Carrick ? that chiropractic neurologist that "Sid's a big believer in, [so] so are we," according to Shero ? to correct some balance issues related to his concussion protocol.

Will he play again this season?

"I think so," said Shero. "Whenever he comes back, we'll have a spot for him and he'll be a huge addition."

There was also the matter of that players' meeting regarding Crosby's absence from the lineup; a meeting reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, seconded by Madden prior to the interview and denied by the Penguins.

After a joke about his having led the meeting, Shero also denied its existence. But even if the Penguins had met about a temporary captaincy, Shero explained why it would never happen.

To reset: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wrote an incendiary column about Crosby's recovery last Friday, that included news that "a group of players held a 45-minute meeting to discuss a temporary captaincy."

Here's Shero and Madden from Monday on WXDX:

SHERO: "Here's my take on this whole thing Mark, which I think is ? Dejan wrote the article, and I only started dealing Dejan this year. I follow his stuff because I'm a big baseball fan and he was covering the Pirates, so I have a lot of respect for him. I don't think that meeting ever took place [in] our locker room. You know, I've been here six years. I know our players. I know our room. I don't think that would ever happen. But Dejan had somebody or some people tell him that a certain thing and he wrote something ?

MADDEN: "I'm not gonna lie to you: I've had a lot people tell me the same thing. That the meeting did take place. It was a more informal gathering to talk about the need for captaincy, not as sinister as a full meeting [in the locker room.] But it seems to me something did happen."

SHERO: "My information tells me that it didn't.

"Irregardless (Ed. Note: Ugh.), Mark. No. 1, for any of that to ever be executed, in terms having an interim captain, it would have to be my decision. And I'm just saying that would never happen. And No. 2, I'm going on the information I got from our players and ? this has nothing to do with Dejan or anything like that. I had a nice conversation with him on the weekend for about 45 minutes, went through everything.

"? We've moved forward. Pour team's moved forward. Our guys had a lot of fun with it on the weekend ? everybody wearing the 'C' and Geno wearing the 'K'. I like our room a lot, and I've said that many times.

"We have a few A's [on the ice], whether it's Kunitz, Orpik, Malkin. These guys are leaders.

"The only thing I can say is that if I actually went to any of these players and said, 'I have an idea. I've been talking to coach, and we should have a temporary captain while Sid is out,' I'm telling you, because I know our team, there's that not a guy that would want to do it because it's Sid's team. It wouldn't happen. Which is why when the report came out, I didn't really give it much credence or much thought until I had to. We're 100 percent behind Sidney being our captain and our leader."

So there you go. The 'C' stops with Shero.

Let's Get Girardi in the All Star Game, Torts Says NHL Is "Ass Backwards"

Source: Zimbio
Last season we got behind the Sean Avery for the All Star campaign. This year the NYR Blog is campaigning for Dan Girardi to play in the All Star game and it's hard not to get behind that push to get out the vote for Girardi. Girardi is one of the most underrated defensemen in the NHL, one of the best shot blockers and one of the Rangers' best players night in and night out. He's been snubbed on the All Star ballot, while Marc Staal (who hasn't played a game this season) is on it.

Far too often the defensive defensemen of the NHL get overlooked because they aren't putting up 40 points a season or rushing the puck end to end. But, Girardi is as good as it gets at his position and certainly worthy of a spot on the All Star team. When it comes to the position of defensemen, you can't tell me that he's not top 10 in the league in his position right now. He's not flashy, but he gets the job done and done well.

Ranger Rants had some good stuff about Girardi after last night's 5-1 against Carolina. Tortorella was asked about Marc Staal being on the ballot and Dan Girardi being left off:
?Oh, this league,? said Tortorella, waving his hand in disgust. ?It?s because he?s not pedigree. There?s no pedigree there. Our league is so ass-backwards when it comes to that. It?s not just this year that he?s been underrated. This guy has been a really good player. But if you don?t have the pedigree in this league, they don?t look at you.?

Not that this is about Staal because if both Girardi and Staal were playing this season, most likely, both would deserve to be on the ballot. But Staal was picked 12th overall in the 2005 draft and has two brothers in the league while Girardi signed with the Rangers on July 1, 2006 as an undrafted free agent out of the Ontario Hockey League, where he played for Barrie, Guelph and London. Girardi?s ascension as one of the better defensemen in the league is truly a great story of hard work and perseverance.

Hear what Torts has to say about the All Star Ballot snub at the 1:40 mark of the video...

Let's make a deal: A look back at this season's biggest trades

After sending the overpaid underacheiver
to Ottawa, the Coyotes understood what
it felt like to be a Canadian voter
The Phoenix Coyotes finally made the long-awaited Kyle Turris trade over the weekend, dealing the disgruntled center to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for young defenceman David Rundblad and a draft pick.

The trade was a rare early-season blockbuster in a league where most trades seem to happen at the trade deadline or in the offseason. It will also be the last NHL deal for a while, since the league-wide holiday trade freeze went into effect on Monday.

So while NHL general managers step away from the negotiating table for a well-deserved break, let's take a look back at some of the significant trades the league has seen since the end of training camp.

The trade: The Devils send David Steckel to the Leafs for a fourth-round draft pick.
The view from Toronto: Steckel gives the team a faceoff specialist who can take the first draw after a Maple Leaf penalty, which is always in the defensive zone, as well as the second draw after a Maple Leaf penalty, which is always at center ice.
The view from New Jersey: Steckel's main role last year with the Capitals was being the guy who'd go up to Alexander Ovechkin before every game and remind him to occasionally score a goal or two, although I'm sure someone else will remember to do that.
Final verdict: The deal saw the Leafs acquire an above-average fourth line center, which I think we all agree was their only major weakness heading into the season.

The trade: The Blues trade Nikita Nikitin to the Blue Jackets for Kris Russell.
The view from St. Louis: Like that old hockey clich says, any time you can get a decent defenseman in return for an obviously fictional player with a ridiculous made up name, you need to make the deal.
The view from Blue Jackets: While it's not uncommon for departing employees to steal a few office supplies on the way out, it still wasn't cool for Russell to try to leave the arena dragging Rick Nash behind him in his hockey bag.
Final verdict: This was a major deal that will have a significant impact, according to the immediate families of whoever these two guys are.

The trade: The Senators send David Rundblad and a second round pick to the Coyotes for Kyle Turris.
The view from Ottawa: Rundblad had developed a reputation for committing lazy turnovers that led directly to easy goals for the other team, and the Senators already have a ton of guys who are good at that.
The view from Phoenix: Turris described his time in Phoenix by saying "it's something that was a frustrating situation and I'm just glad it's in the past", with the "it" presumably referring to "sunlight".
Final verdict: In hindsight, Turris probably regrets not being more specific with that "no trades to teams with scoreboards from the 1950s" contract clause.

The trade: The Canucks acquire David Booth, Steven Reinprecht and a draft pick from the Panthers for Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm.
The view from Vancouver: When it comes to the playoffs, ex-Panther Booth doesn't know the meaning of the word "lose", although the same could technically be said for the words "win" and "playoffs".
The view from Florida: Both of the players they acquired are old and overpaid and will be unrestricted free agents next year, so they can pretty much buy houses in Florida any time now.
Final verdict: As per tradition, this blockbuster trade between the Canucks and Panthers did not involve any clutch goaltenders.

The trade: The Canadiens trade Jaroslav Spacek to the Hurricanes for Tomas Kaberle.
The view from Carolina: Spacek fills a critical need for the Hurricanes blueline, in the sense that he is a hockey player who is not Tomas Kaberle.
The view from Montreal: You have to give the Canadiens credit for being much more responsive than the Maple Leafs when you complain about the head coach, according to Kaberle's dad.
Final verdict: When it was pointed out that Kaberle has an additional two years left on his high-priced contract, Pierre Gauthier told reporters "Yes, I'll definitely have to deal with that when I'm general manager here during the 2013-14 season" before laughing sarcastically and then going back to updating his resume.

Watch 19-year-old Dominic Lammer?s sneaky lacrosse goal in Swiss league (Video)

There's that wonderful moment in hockey when you know the lacrosse shot* is coming. It's when the defenders are all a safe distance away, having left an attacking player alone behind the net. Then the guy with the puck crouches down and begins to lift it with his stick. You can imagine where it goes from here.

That scenario played out in a recent Swiss league game, as Dominic Lammer of EVZ (Glen Metropolit's team!) electrified the crowd with this sneaky shot against the Kloten Flyers:

(Please note the preceding video was labeled "Airhook von Dominic Lammer" on YouTube and was uploaded by someone named "LammerAirhook." Which is awesome.)

There's an interesting back story to this latest lacrosse goal as well.

From reader Adrian Iten, who hipped us to this clip:

The 19-year old Dominic Lammer is playing for EV Zug in the Swiss National League A (highest league). He was replacing Zug's (and league's) top scorer Damien Brunner as he was out due to sickness.

It was his 5th game of the season and his first NLA-goal. He scored two goals that night and yesterday; Saturday night he had a double goal night again. So quite a good weekend He played six games this year with 4 goals and 2 assists.

Before he played in Zug he just played 3 other NLA-games for Kloten.

Funny fact is, that he was replacing Damien Brunner who was doing this last year in a game against EHC Biel:

Another fun fact is, that Brunner once had been traded from Kloten Flyers to Zug for nothing (a bad 4th liner called Thomas Walser). Now he's one of the best Swiss offence players and for sure the most creative one. Nice Datsyuk-style shoot out goal:

Now Lammer is traded via Kloten Flyers to Zug as well. And of course everybody is hoping now that they get another Damien Brunner.

Swiss drama! Thanks for the info, sir.

* Whenever we run a clip labeled as a "lacrosse goal," there are always comments from our European readers about how the inspiration is actually Floorball and the "Zorro goal." True as this may be, Mike Legg's was a lacrosse goal. All others shall be categorized thusly.

Bruins, Canucks get chippy; suspensions coming for Lucic, Marchand?

There was no love lost between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks this afternoon in their rematch of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final that ended in a 4-3 win for the visitors. The opening four minutes of the game featured 40 minutes in penalties, a line brawl and a potential suspension coming for Milan Lucic.

First, here's the Bruins and Canucks exchanging pleasantries:

Lucic was given two minutes for roughing and a 10-minute game misconduct for leaving the bench. What's still to be determined is whether or not Lucic leaving the bench would be considered a legal or illegal line change.

Via Mike Halford of PHT, here's Lucic right as the scrum was beginning along the boards:

According to ESPN's Joe MacDonald, the officials will confer after the game and figure out how they'll interpret Rule 70 in terms of whether or not Lucic has a suspension coming his way.

The rule states a 10-game suspension is for the first coming onto the ice for the "purpose of starting an altercation". However you determine whether or not Lucic left the bench, the scrum was already involved and Lucic skates in. Seems like, if anything, Lucic will get a fine like Steve Downie did against the New York Rangers last month.

Also of note: Henrik Sedin gets involved in the scrum for about a second and you can count six Vancouver players involved before the Canucks' captain skates off the ice realizing there's way too many guys in white out there.

But Lucic wasn't the only potential video Brendan Shanahan will review this weekend.

Late in the second period, Brad Marchand upended Sami Salo with a hipcheck that drew a five-minute major for clipping and a game misconduct. Marchand came in low. Very, very low:

The Salo left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return.

Marchand was suspended last March for two games for a hit on Columbus Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger and fined last month for a slew-foot on Matt Niskanen of the Pittsburgh Penguins, so he's in the NHL's system and would be considered a repeat offender should supplemental discipline be coming his way.

UPDATE: The NHL has rescinded Lucic's game misconduct:

The Game Misconduct penalty assessed toBoston Bruins forward Milan Lucic during NHL Game #598 this afternoon inBoston has been rescinded, National Hockey League Senior Vice President andDirector of Officiating Terry Gregson announced today.

Lucic was assessed a Game Misconduct 3:54 into the first period forviolating National Hockey League Rule 70.1 ? Leaving the Bench. However, avideo review of the incident revealed that Lucic did not leave the bench tojoin or start an altercation but rather had entered the ice legally overthe boards and was about to step back onto the bench through the door whenhe changed course and joined a scrum.

"The referees reacted to what they saw," Gregson said. "The onlyplayer they saw coming from the bench area from either team was Lucic. Butwith the benefit of replay, we can see that Lucic had previously enteredthe ice over the boards legally to join the play and actually wascontemplating stepping back onto the bench through the door when the
altercation ensued.

"It should be further noted that a review of the video confirmed thatall players on both teams involved in the altercation had entered the icelegally for the purpose of joining the play. None entered the ice for thepurpose of joining or starting an altercation, which is prohibited by Rule70."
